Genetic Roulette: The Gamble of our Lives

Genetic Roulette: The Gamble of Our Lives is a 2012 documentary by Jeffrey Smith, an activist and advocate against genetically modified food and founder of The Institute for Responsible Technology, which calls itself “The most comprehensive source of GMO health risk information on the web.” A New Yorker article on Dr. Oz, whose wife Lisa Oz co-narrated the film, notes that Smith studied business at the Maharishi International University but has no scientific degree nor experience in genetics or agriculture, which has led detractors to question his authority on the subject, though others champion him as an important public educator.

His basic argument in the film is that chronic illnesses, digestive disorders, allergies, autism and other conditions are all on the rise in the United States due to the increasing prevalence of GMOs in our food supply and that the US government and industry have ignored or suppressed evidence of this health emergency. The evidence presented in the film includes testimony from farmers, parents, scientists, veterinarians, doctors, activists and others, who make claims that will be evaluated in the next section.
