THE ACT OF KILLING When Joshua Oppenheimer travels to Indonesia to make a documentary about the massacre of more than a million political opponents in 1965, he can not imagine that, 45 years after the fact, terrorized survivors would hesitate to speak out. The executioners, protected by a corrupted power, free themselves and even offer to replay the scenes of abuse they committed. Joshua Oppenheimer seizes on this proposal in an unprecedented film-making exercise where the executioners proudly relive their crimes on camera, cheerfully celebrating their role in this mass murder. "As if Hitler and his accomplices had survived, then would have gathered to reconstruct their favorite scenes of the Holocaust in front of a camera," says journalist Brian D. Johnson.
